Roller Girls – CLTRG vs the Philly Independence Dolls and the Star City Roller Girls

BoToxic Bruz’her as jammer against The Philly Independence Dolls

Recently I attended an epic double header featuring two divisions of the Charlotte Roller Girls against both The Philly Independence Dolls, and the Star City Roller Girls.
Charlotte’s B Dazzlers spanked the Star City Roller Girls in a way usually reserved for redheaded stepchildren. Nonetheless, it was a fantastic game to watch; both teams were playing at the top of their abilities. However, Charlotte had a new player debut, which I would love to show you some pictures of. Unfortunately, she’s just too damn fast. I only had one turn out decent (not great), but I just couldn’t leave out Da Bomb-Chell’s image, even if it is just her name on the back of her jersey blurring by while nailing an opposing jammer. Final score was 180-70 (daaaamn).
The second match, CLTRG vs the Philly Independence Dolls did not work out for the Charlotte Roller Girls. The final score was 97-117, but there were many times that it looked like the balance was going to change. Again, this was a bang-up game, with no slackers on either side. The double header was a great way to end the home games and set off into the away season.

Photography buffs: I shot the game with either a F1.8 50mm or the 18-200mmVR2 on a d200. The streaky+crisp shots are taken somewhere between 18-200m and F3.5-5.6 at 1/40 with a depressing iso ~400, zooming and panning along with subject with two sb-600s about 8′ to my left, slaved to my sb-800, which was in horseshoe aimed at the slave’s bleachers. These are my favourite derby shots so far. Feeling complete, I think I’m going to move on to something really entertaining like culinary photography or landscapes.

Disney Princess Drag Show

oh HELL no, that ***** is wearing my dress!

oh HELL no, that ***** is wearing my dress!

What little girl doesn’t love Disney’s armada of fairytale princesses? So when I heard about the Disney princess drag show brunch planned at Hartigan’s, I couldn’t resist. I just had to take Pheonix, our little girl. Lucky for Pheonix, Heather Alexander is her mother, a lifelong makeup artist and costumer. So, Pheonix went out to the show in full princess regalia.

We weren’t really prepared for Pheonix to be wearing almost the exact same dress as the master of ceremonies. Gladly, there was cooing and happiness. Not once did someone say, “oh HELL no!~ That ***** is wearing MY dress!”.

O’Malley Family Photo Shoot

Win.

Win.

A quick photo shoot for Lily O’Malley’s family in Charlotte, NC. Family portraits can be horrible events, but this one went really well. Only one kid was doing ‘that thing’, but with perseverance, and believable fake smiles we tricked him into looking happy for two shots.

Charlotte Rollergirls Vs. Cape Fear

Another photo set from the Charlotte Rollergirls. This one shot mostly at a 1/20th shutter. While anyone that knows anything about photography is aware of how many shots I lost due to such a slow shutter speed, I was really happy with the images that did manage to get past the fast girls and shaky hands.

I did not use motion blur once in photoshop. This is all natural fighter jet pilot types on rollerskates.

Charlotte Roller Girls

Some photography I recently did at a Charlotte Rollergirls match at the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, NC. It seems Atlanta drastically underestimated Charlotte and decided to send their b-team. You’ll see the result of that decision in one of the images of a projected scoreboard.

I’m not thrilled having not gotten any really epic shots, but these at least show some of the motion and action of the game.
